OVERVIEW

Scholars Academies’ elementary schools prepare students with the academic skills, strength of character, and emotional well-being to excel in high school and college, to lead in their communities, and to realize their best possible selves. Scholars Academies are operated by East Harlem Tutorial Program, a community-based organization providing educational opportunities for East Harlem’s young people since 1958.

The East Harlem Scholars Academies community fosters a culture of learning, service, kindness, and respect. We incorporate responsive classroom and restorative practices to create joyful and academically challenging classrooms where children feel safe, cared for, and valued.

Our student-centered design is made possible by our low student-to-teacher ratio and commitment to meeting the different learning needs of our students and the diverse backgrounds of our families. We also provide a comprehensive range of English Language Learner and special education services.

Scholars Academy II develops critical-thinking, writing, reading comprehension, and analytical skills through:

  • Engaging programs to foster a love of reading and writing;

  • Cognitively guided math instruction;

  • Science exploration and project-based learning;

  • Spanish, music, art, and physical education;

  • Winter and spring student showcases;

  • Field trips to museums and other cultural organizations.

Exceptional Teachers

We hire, train, and retain only the most qualified and invested teachers, and give them the tools and resources to ensure the success of our scholars. Our collaborative, diverse and multi-lingual staff is passionate about teaching. They make our schools exciting places where students are challenged and engaged.

More Time for Learning

To achieve our goals for our scholars, we devote more time to learning. Our school day and year are extended to give students enough time to practice and master new skills.

Community-Based

Our school is a community grounded in teamwork among staff, families, scholars, and the community. Families are welcome to join us for breakfast each morning and at our monthly Community Circle gatherings and are encouraged to actively participate in school decision-making through the Family Council. We also host family workshops and opportunities to speak with the school leadership team.

We are proud to serve East Harlem. Every classroom is named for an East Harlem hero and we are always excited to design classroom and school-wide events that celebrate our community.

Enrollment

Enrollment is by lottery with preference given to siblings, residents of East Harlem (CSD 4), English Language Learners, and students with individualized education programs (IEP).

East Harlem Scholars Academies are public charter schools operated by East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP), a community-based organization founded in 1958.
